Yann, guidelines for quality list 2 mp while here its 5 (if I do the math correctly). The "educational" part is also neither objective, nor based on guidelines. We have photos of white walls featured here. --EUPBR (talk) 18:42, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Support Sorry but I fail to see what's so wrong with this that it deserves to be FPX'd. Re. educational value: photograph of a well known film director by a well known German portrait photographer who is sufficiently notable to have an English wikipedia article. Re. poor quality: resolution is not huge but it is adequate for FP (5.7 megapixels). Good sharpness at full size, even the individual hairs on Mr von Trier's beard are visible. I don't really like the choice to cut it out and place it on a white background but that is Herr Mark's artistic choice. I find the optical illusion impressive (I've seen it before but it continues to impress) - and I also appreciate Mark's artistic intention in using a slightly psychedelic, 'trippy' kind of background for a portrait of a director known for his avant-garde, dark, and provocative filmmaking. Overall FP to me. I think this is the first time I've ever contested an FPX but I sincerely think this picture deserves more debate. Cmao20 (talk) 22:48, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for nominating this image. Unfortunately, it does not fall within the Guidelines and is unlikely to succeed for the following reason: Poor quality smartphone picture. Yann (talk) 18:33, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Neutral The composition is great. Normally you'd think such clouds would be disturbing, but here they actually enhance the compo. However, I think the quality is lacking, with details lost in highlights and halos around the domes. --Cart(talk)20:02, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose Great motive and beautiful composition, but unfortunately it looks oversaturated, overprocessed and rather noisy (and there is no metadata). So reluctantly I have to oppose. --imehling (talk) 20:12, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Weak oppose Really sorry. Excellent image quality as usual from you but I personally miss an outstanding composition. I am not sure placing the horizon centrally was the right choice, and it feels like the lighthouse tower is a bit lost in the surroundings. Cmao20 (talk) 13:33, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Info Anna's magnificent sea slugs (Chromodoris annae), Anilao, Philippines. This species of nudibranch is found in the central area of the Indo-Pacific region and can reach depths of between 15–30 metres (49–98 ft). It can reach a maximum size of 5 centimetres (2.0 in) length. Its diet consists only of Petrosaspongia sp., a group of sponge, due to its noxious chemical composition. It's able to absorb this compound and store it in glands that stretch around the mantle. These stored chemicals are unpleasant to some surrounding fish, allowing Chromodoris annae to avoid predation. Note: we have no FPs of this species. c/u/n by Poco a poco (talk) 19:09, 6 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Info That's a fascimile of his signature, which seemed sufficient reason to include it, since the photo is primarily used on pages about him. We could do a cropped version, I suppose, but generally we promote the least cropped version. Adam Cuerden (talk) 14:55, 6 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Since I know that if I don't do it, there's every chance someone else is going to, and possibly upload over, I've uploaded a cropped version as well. I don't think the crop is as useful for most uses: This is a self-portrait, after all, so the frame is Bogardus's creation, or at least artistic decision - but I think it's often better to not leave it to others to make. Adam Cuerden (talk) 12:06, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Support Good photograph (imagine how difficult it was then to take a self-portrait photograph which was sharp on the front eye), nice frame and signature, excellent restoration. – Aristeas (talk) 17:28, 6 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Support And thank you for providing a crop. Like you say, it is inevitable, so it might just as well be done by someone who knows how to do it, and how to make the correct links on the file pages. --Cart(talk)19:45, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Support Nice scene. Have taken the liberty to refine the gallery link: we have a subsection for the Bee-eaters, so we should use that one for the gallery link. – Aristeas (talk) 17:11, 6 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Support Very good quality, beautiful lighting and atmosphere, and in this case even the chairs do not irritate, but contribute to the composition. – Aristeas (talk) 17:14, 6 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes - the unusual arrangement of chairs was actually what drew me particularly to this one amongst DXR's photos of this church. Cmao20 (talk) 22:30, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Aristeas, not a native English speaker, but I speak "water vessel". These kind of vessels are called Riverboats or Tour boats in English, so that will make it a boat and not a ship. People sometimes get confused by the designation "SS" in front of the name of similar boats, but that doesn't mean "steam ship", see the article Steamship. --Cart(talk)09:58, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose It's an impressive view of something that's only a few square mm, but the post processing isn't all there, with a light gradient going from green to purple over the surface. Also, the black border is not doing the image any favors, even if it is just background. Can be fixed though. --Cart(talk)19:38, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Support Very nice, but could you perhaps check the parameters for CA removal on this. You got some of those telltale gray rectangles, especially where the wing meets the body. Support I like that we see the castle and its church at eye level over the valley. The photo was taken through the only usable opening in a hedge, so I could not avoid the foreground leaves at the left, bottom, and right; but IMHO it’s nice how they conceal the buildings in the valley and hence emphasize the castle. -- Aristeas (talk) 17:06, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Support It’s a matter of taste, but personally I would regard the TD Terrace skyscraper as rather ugly and boring. But I love this detail of its glass façade. The photographer has found a perspective from which the lower corner appears as a perfect continuous curve, like the graph of a mathematical function, resulting in a beautiful minimalist composition. – Aristeas (talk) 16:34, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Weak oppose As much as I love abstract architectural photos, this one lacks the relationship between light and shadows that define the 3d form, which is to say it lacks the wow Henrysz (talk) 20:06, 5 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Support Beautiful. Good choice for the duration of the long exposure: the river looks soft like silk, but still like a river – sometimes people exaggerate the long exposure, making the water appear too soft and unnatural. – Aristeas (talk) 19:55, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Featured picture candidates/File:Sydney Sweeney 2019 by Glenn Francis.jpgCommons:Featured picture candidates/File:Sydney Sweeney 2019 by Glenn Francis.jpg
Comment Hem, a small part of the background right over her head is looking strange, like retouched. This could be a hint that the background or a part of it has been exchanged, contributing to the artificial look mentioned by Kritzolina. – Aristeas (talk) 20:37, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I have to correct myself. When we compare other photos from the same event which show indentical background colours (e.g. 1, 2), it seems the photographer has just removed the black border between the colours because here it appeared right behind Sweeney’s head which was certainly irritating. So the background is mostly authentic. I guess it’s the almost symmetric arrangement and the front-heavy lighting which give the artificial impression. It’s the same with similar portraits from the same event (e.g.), while the more casual shots (e.g.) look natural. – Aristeas (talk) 21:00, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Weak oppose Quality is good but when I compare it to this recent nomination, the other picture, while also obviously in a glamorous publicity setting, feels more candid and spontaneous. This one feels staged and artificial by comparison. So, mainly agree with Kritzolina. Cmao20 (talk) 00:48, 5 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose I don't envy these actors who are under contract to get this dolled up and stand there smiling at every promotion of a movie. These events very seldom makes for good portrait photos, and this is one example of it. The photo doesn't do her justice. --Cart(talk)19:16, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose For 2 reasons: 1) Visually, you can't read the texts written in small size, unless it's displayed huge like a poster. 2) Too much of "everything / anything", that is obviously too complex, specific and cluttered, with unnecessary curved arrows, ellipses, or asterisks in captions saying "Asterisk means still hypothetical", etc. -- Basile Morin (talk) 02:10, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose To me the light feels ordinary, and makes the scene appear flat. And, the background is busy and just as in focus as the subject, which is distracting. Though I couldn't produce a better result in the same setting. Henrysz (talk) 04:00, 3 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Question Are these flashy sportswear pieces part of the artist's original work? It's possible but I tried to find some information about this sculptor on Google, and didn't find much other than this and this, where no evidence is given that this artist dresses his works of art. As here for the sculpture Het Lieverdje by Carel Kneulman in Amsterdam, compared to the original. -- Basile Morin (talk) 03:46, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Answer: I assume so, it certainly looked authentic. It never occurred to me that it wasn't meant to be that way. If this had been an inappropriate joke, I think the clothes would have been removed long ago because the artworks were viewed regularly. I also scanned the information on the sculpture with my phone and you also saw photos of a dressed boy.--Agnes Monkelbaan (talk) 06:29, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Support Very beautiful and poetic. We are a little bit spoilt by the wonderful focus-stacked images of flowers, but IMHO there is still room for classic one-shot photographs like this one. It’s sharp where it matters, and the soft transition from sharp to unsharp gives it a delicate quality which is very appropriate for this subject and which I sometimes miss in the focus-stacked images. – Aristeas (talk) 14:33, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
